Boosting Middle School Literacy: How Readable English is Making a Difference in the ClassroomA recent peer-reviewed study shows Readable English significantly boosts reading fluency and comprehension for struggling middle school students. |
We’re excited to introduce this week’s Feature Spotlight: Fluency Builders! Designed to empower students in developing reading fluency, this activity aims to increase the number of words read correctly per minute—an essential skill for lifelong literacy.
The Fluency Builders allow students to engage in repeated reading of the same passage over a week. Each passage is read three times: the first two reads in Readable English, followed by a third read in Standard English. This approach helps students master challenging words, enhance accuracy, and improve expression, paving the way for students to focus on meaning.
Starting in Phase 2, students can access Fluency Builders directly from their Lessons timeline. Each reading is designed to be completed in 60 seconds, with the option to stop early if they finish beforehand.
As a teacher, you can easily track student progress through the Teacher Fluency Builder Panel. Here’s how it works:
Access Recordings: Click on a student’s name to view their recordings. The first two reads are practice, while the third is scored.
Listen and Score: Use the Listen / Mark button to score the third read. You’ll see suggestions for errors detected by our voice recognition system, which you can accept or adjust as needed.
Performance Tracking: After scoring, view the number of errors, accuracy rate, and WCPM score, all crucial metrics for monitoring progress.
Individualized Learning
The Fluency Builders are tailored to each student’s reading level, determined by their Beginning of Year benchmark assessment. If a student reads at a lower grade level, the Fluency Builders will adapt accordingly, ensuring individualized scaffolding for every learner.
Monitoring Progress
You can easily track each student’s journey through the Progress Page. The Fluency Builder tile allows you to view scores for each student. As students progress to higher grade levels, you may notice changes in their WCPM scores due to increased reading difficulty - each grade level is color-coded for quick reference.
Encourage Growth
Remember to involve students in monitoring their own growth! Use their own Fluency Builder chart to motivate them to improve their scores while celebrating their efforts, not just the results.
Start using the Fluency Builders today and watch your students flourish as they become more confident and fluent readers!
