 Anna Boyle

We’re thrilled to present this week’s Feature Spotlight: Comprehension and Writing Skill Builders! Designed to enhance your students' reading and writing abilities, these worksheets guide them through a structured process that fosters deeper understanding when reading and sets them up with tools for effective writing.

What Are The Comprehension and Writing Skill Builders?

Completed over a week, these skill builders consist of three key parts: Analyze It, Outline It, and Write It. The goal is to help students focus on essential components of texts, enabling them to extract main ideas, supporting details, and conclusions effectively.

Breakdown of the Process

  1. Analyze It: Students begin by reading a text and answering a series of six targeted questions, which include:
    • One main idea question
    • Three detail-oriented questions
    • A vocabulary question
    • One question referring to either a conclusion, inference, or prediction
As they progress, students receive immediate feedback with ticks or crosses to guide their understanding, allowing them to learn and retry as needed.

  2. Outline It: In this stage, students revisit the text to fill in a hamburger outline based on their responses from Analyze It. They identify:
    • The main idea
    • Three supporting details
    • A concluding statement
This section encourages students to synthesize information in a clear, organized manner, reinforcing their comprehension.

  3. Write It: Finally, students write a story using their hamburger outline as a framework. This process enables them to understand the importance of a clear outline and structure when writing.

Teacher Insights

Once students complete the Outline It and Write It sections, you can review their work and provide feedback. “Excellent” and “Satisfactory” both mark the activity as complete, while “Needs Improvement” indicates that the student should try again. You can provide comments in the text box to give guidance, helping students understand how to enhance their responses and encouraging their growth.
